FAQ & Patient Prep

Everything you need to know

How to prepare for your EEG or NCS, plus answers to the questions we hear most often.

Preparing for an EEG

  • Wash your hair the night before — no oils, gels, sprays or conditioners.
  • Eat a normal meal before the test (low blood sugar can affect tracings).
  • Continue your medications unless told otherwise by your doctor.
  • If a sleep-deprived EEG was requested, follow the sleep restriction instructions you were given.
  • Bring a list of your current medications.

Preparing for an NCS

  • Bathe normally; do not apply lotions, oils or creams to your skin on the day of the test.
  • Wear loose clothing that allows access to arms and legs.
  • Avoid very cold environments before the test — warm skin gives cleaner readings.
  • Inform the technologist if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator or bleeding disorder.
  • Continue your medications unless told otherwise.
