FAQ & Patient Prep
Everything you need to know
How to prepare for your EEG or NCS, plus answers to the questions we hear most often.
Preparing for an EEG
- Wash your hair the night before — no oils, gels, sprays or conditioners.
- Eat a normal meal before the test (low blood sugar can affect tracings).
- Continue your medications unless told otherwise by your doctor.
- If a sleep-deprived EEG was requested, follow the sleep restriction instructions you were given.
- Bring a list of your current medications.
Preparing for an NCS
- Bathe normally; do not apply lotions, oils or creams to your skin on the day of the test.
- Wear loose clothing that allows access to arms and legs.
- Avoid very cold environments before the test — warm skin gives cleaner readings.
- Inform the technologist if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator or bleeding disorder.
- Continue your medications unless told otherwise.
